ENGLISH HAMMERED FARTHINGS, DIE COMPARISONS OF
BMC 204 and BMC 207

Near to the bottom of Plate 2 at the back of the book by Charles Wilson Peck "English copper, tin and bronze coins 1558-1958 in the British Museum", the illustration of the 9 die strip of BMC 207 compared to the single illustration of BMC 204 shows a distinct difference in punctuation by the addition of a apostrophe stop at the end of the obverse legend on BMC 204.

All cut coins without the apostrophe stop have a tendency to line up with one of the 9 individual dies of BMC 207 but since BMC 207 refers to a 9 die full strip, a new number has been allocated for identification purposes, this new number is BMC 204-207 Die n (where n is the relative die number).

Table 1 lists the 9 cut die coins of BMC 207 with sample pictures of each, confirmation that cut farthings of all die numbers represented by the strip existed in circulation. The new arbitrary reference number has been used in the table.

Table 2 lists different dies of BMC 204 (die axis NORMAL) in a random order, all coins have an apostrophe stop after the obverse legend. Hopefully more dies will emerge in the future.

Table 3 lists different dies of BMC 204 (die axis INVERTED) in a random order, all coins have an apostrophe stop after the obverse legend. Hopefully more dies will emerge in the future.

If any collectors have other fully identifiable die variations in their possession
which can eventually be scanned for confirming and updating the tables and would care
to assist in a hopeful conclusion to this exercise.
Please send details to this e-mail address for attention

A natural progression to this exercise could be to determine the different dies associated
with other possible strips of 9 using the same or other punches
